501 (c) 3 Nonprofit Corporations In the State of Indiana, a nonprofit corporation is defined as "a businesses organized with a purpose other than generating profit". The organization can raise revenue and no member or employee may be paid a dividend or salary beyond reasonable compensation.
The incorporation process specific to churches in Indiana is governed by state law. The church needs to select a business name. They must recruit at least three directors and draft and file Articles of Incorporation with the Indiana Secretary of State. The articles serve as the Church constitution and need to include basic information while also naming an individual to receive future correspondence from the state. The articles need to specify why the church was created (specifically to further a religious purpose) and that, upon dissolution of the church as an organization, the church's assets will go to another nonprofit.
